therapist explaining ketamine infusion therapy to young male clientKetamine infusion therapy is a proven and effective treatment in the behavioral health industry for the treatment of various conditions. Ketamine is an anesthetic that has been used for over 50 years. Its ability to anesthetize patients quickly and safely, with few side effects, was quickly appreciated by the medical community.

Primarily, it was used as a sedative, as it did not affect blood pressure or respiration significantly and could be administered to patients in various ways. Even today, it most commonly remains in use as a sedative medication for short procedures and induction of anesthesia during surgery. However, ketamine infusion treatment for behavioral health conditions requires infusion doses that are significantly lower than the doses given for sedation and induction of anesthesia, at about 5-10% of an induction dose.

TRU Wellness Center offers ketamine infusion therapy as part of our ketamine services, which also includes a ketamine nasal spray. If you or a loved one are struggling with mental health issues, call 888.680.7025 to learn how our ketamine treatment could benefit you.

What Conditions Benefit from Ketamine Infusion Therapy?

There are several mental health conditions that have proven responsive to ketamine-infusing treatment. Some of these include the following:

  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Bipolar depression

Ketamine infusion therapy has shown promising results for these conditions, providing relief for clients who have not found success with traditional treatments. It works by targeting receptors in the brain that regulate mood and emotions, leading to a rapid reduction in symptoms.

How Does Ketamine Treatment Work?

During the 1990s and early 2000s, researchers began to notice that ketamine produced a positive effect on the recipient’s mood and affect after receiving just one dose. Further research was completed with intramuscular and intravenous injections, which confirmed that the research subjects had improved symptoms, but how does it work?

Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist and an AMPA receptor stimulator. AMPA stimulation increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). BDNF stimulates the formation of new receptors and synapses (which are vital connections between neurons). Research suggests that a deficiency in these connections is associated with major depressive disorder and other mood disorders, difficulties with sleep, over-stimulation, and focus.

Three Main Advantages of Ketamine Treatment

Ketamine infusion therapy offers many benefits to those with behavioral and mental health conditions. At TRU Wellness Center in Minnetonka, MN, we are committed to providing our clients with individualized treatment plans that address their specific needs and well-being.

Safety

All treatments are administered under the direct supervision of a medical care professional. Side effects and contraindications to ketamine infusions are very few.

Rapid Response

Current medications that are in use for the treatment of depression and other listed disorders can take several weeks or months to show results. Comparatively, client response to ketamine treatment can be very quick. Some clients experience improvement within 24 hours. Many clients experience considerable relief from their symptoms after their 2nd or 3rd session.

Efficacy

In a recent study, more than 50% of participants saw a decrease in depressive symptoms within six weeks of starting ketamine infusion treatment, and 20% experienced remission of depressive symptoms. Response and remission rates were 72% and 38%, respectively, after ten infusions, and there was a 50% reduction in self-harm/suicidal ideation (SI) symptom scores within six weeks. A 30% reduction in anxiety symptoms was also observed.[1]
